Signs You Need to Replace Your Water Heater

Age of Your Water Heater

Most water heaters last between 8-12 years. If yours is approaching this age range, it's time to start monitoring it closely for signs of failure.

Rusty Water

If you notice rusty water coming only from your hot water taps, this could indicate that your water heater is rusting from the inside out.

Strange Noises

Rumbling, popping, or banging noises from your water heater often indicate sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. As the sediment is heated and reheated, it eventually hardens, leading to less efficient heating and potential damage.

Water Leaks

Any moisture or small pools of water around your water heater indicate a leak or fracture in the tank. This is often a sign that a total failure is imminent.

Inconsistent Temperature

If your shower suddenly goes cold before you've finished, or if water temperature is inconsistent, your water heater may be failing.

Higher Energy Bills

An aging, inefficient water heater will use more energy to heat the same amount of water, resulting in higher utility bills.

When to Replace vs. Repair

Consider replacement if:

  • Your water heater is over 10 years old
  • Repairs would cost more than half the price of a new unit
  • You're experiencing multiple issues simultaneously

A new, energy-efficient water heater can save you money in the long run through lower energy costs and fewer repairs.
